Action of pesticides to Metarhizium anisopliae in soil Neotropical Entomology
Mochi,Dinalva A.; Monteiro,Antonio C.; Barbosa,José C..
The present study aimed to analyze the action of some acaricides, fungicides, insecticides and herbicides containing different active ingredients on Metarhizium anisopliae Metsch. (Sorokin) inoculated into autoclaved soil. The action of the pesticides was evaluated based on the fungal respiratory activity. The first assessment was done at 48h after inoculation. The pesticides were then added and respiratory activity was determined nine times every 48h and an additional five times every 4 days. Except for the fungicides, no significant effect (P > 0.05) of the pesticides on M. anisopliae was observed. A reduction in CO2 production was observed for the mancozeb treatment from day 4 to day 6 of incubation, and for tebuconazol between days 4 and 6, 8 and...

Effect of amitraz and xylazine on some physiological variables of horses Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Queiroz-Neto,A.; Carregaro,A.B.; Zamur,G.; Harkins,J.D.; Tobin,T.; Mataqueiro,M.I.; Gonçalves,S.C..
The effect of the intravenous injection of amitraz (0.1mg/kg) to horses on cardiac activity, respiratory rate, intestinal motor activity, rectal temperature, sweating and masticating was evaluated and compared to the effect of intravenous administration of xylazine (1mg/kg, iv) on heart rate, respiratory rate and intestinal activity. Amitraz caused a significant decrease in heart activity, respiratory rate and intestinal movements, but these effects were not as pronounced as those caused by xylazine. Amitraz also caused a significant relaxation of the rectal smooth muscle, and an apparent increase in sweating and in the frequency of horses found masticating hay. Rectal temperature was not influenced by amitraz. The results indicated that amitraz, at the...

Humic fractions of forest, pasture and maize crop soils resulting from microbial activity BJM
Tavares,Rose Luiza Moraes; Nahas,Ely.
Humic substances result from the degradation of biopolymers of organic residues in the soil due to microbial activity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of three different ecosystems: forest, pasture and maize crop on the formation of soil humic substances relating to their biological and chemical attributes. Microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial respiratory activity, nitrification potential, total organic carbon, soluble carbon, humic and fulvic acid fractions and the rate and degree of humification were determined. Organic carbon and soluble carbon contents decreased in the order: forest > pasture > maize; humic and fulvic acids decreased in the order forest > pasture=maize. The MBC and respiratory activity were not...

Recovery of soil microbiological properties in a degraded area planted with Corymbia citriodora and Leucaena leucocephala Scientia Agricola
Valpassos,Maria Alexandra Reis; Maltoni,Kátia Luciene; Cassiolato,Ana Maria Rodrigues; Nahas,Ely.
The influence of reforestation was evaluated during two season periods (February and October) in sites planted with Corymbia citriodora and Leucaena_leucocephala through microorganism counts (bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, and nitrite oxidizers) and microbial activity (respiratory and urease activities). An Atlantic forest and a bare soil site were used as controls. The general trends of the variables in the different soils were: Atlantic forest or L. leucocephala > C. citriodora > bare soil. The microbial populations in L. leucocephala and C. citriodora soils were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that found in the bare soil. Similar results were obtained for respiratory and urease activities. The microbiological variables of the soil under...

The effect of feeding on the respiratory activity of the sloth BJMBR
Pedrosa,M.A.C.; Lima,A.M.J.; Bezerra,A.P.; Duarte,D.P.F.; Da-Costa,C.P..
The aim of the present study was to confirm whether feeding influences the resting breathing rate and to observe possible alterations in blood gas and pH levels produced by feeding in unanesthetized sloths (Bradypus variegatus). Five adult male sloths (4.1 ± 0.6 kg) were placed daily in an experimental chair for a period of at least 4 h for sitting adaptation. Five measurements were made for each sloth. However, the sloths one, two and five were studied once and the sloths three and four were studied twice. Breathing rate was determined with an impedance meter and the output signal was digitized. Arterial blood samples were collected for blood gas analysis with a BGE electrolytes analyzer and adjusted for the animal's body temperature and hemoglobin...
